Tactical knife techniques in Arnis simulates the use of one short weapon such as Balaraw (dagger), kutsilyo (knife), Balisong (butterfly knife), and Dulo-Dulo (Palm stick). Balaraw is an interesting aspect of Panandata (weaponry) as it focuses on the use of every part of an edge weapon such a the punya (tip), Punyo (butt) as well as the edge (talim), blunt and side of the knife.
Knife techniques is also the baseline for utilizing other auxiliary weapons such as Karambit and Dulo-dulo
Practice wise, Balaraw or Knife techniques has its own set of specific techniques but is also easily incorporated to Panununtukan (Filipino boxing). Applied to Panuntukan, the knife then becomes an auxiliary weapon rather than the main weapon (which in this case is the empty hand).
Balaraw techniques are considered as medium and close quarter techniques (as opposed to long-medium range for double and single weapon), however, most of the techniques of its bigger siblings (like double Baston and single Baston) that utilises Long to mid range can also be applied knife such a thrusting with the tip (punya), slashing with the edge, butting with the punyo, etc...
