Arnis and the Philippine Flag

Arnis and the Philippine Flag

The flag of the Philippines is both symbolic and historic. Symbolic as it represents the sovereignty of the Republic of the Philippines, and historic, as it codifies the Filipinos quest for freedom against colonial powers.

The Philippine flag has took on many forms which lead to what it is today. However, regardless of previous and current design of the flag one thing is for sure - the breadth and depth of the idealism that it represents.

Paghahanda

Paghahanda is referred to as the training and conditioning aspect of Arnis that prepares both the mind and the body to develop reaction, reflex and randomness.

This is one of the most crucial and critical part of Arnis that is often neglected or taken aside, the mind and the body needs to be properly prepared before training, neglecting it could mean inefficiency and injury.

Pagbuno | Dumog

Pagbuno, also commonly called as Dumog or Buno, is the locking, throwing, out balancing and grappling aspect of Arnis.  Pagbuno does not necessarily start at the ground but can be initiated from standing position leading to ground work.

What makes Filipino Pagbuno or Dumog different is it's awareness of the weapon ( the presence as well as the absence of it) when executing locks, throws, grappling and other techniques.

Panandyakan

Panandyakan is the kicking and foot control aspect of Arnis.  "Kick" or "to kick" in Tagalog are commonly termed as "sipa", "sikad", "tadyak" thus from the root word the kicking art can also be called as Pagsipa (from sipa), Sikaran (from sikad) and Panandyakan (from tadyak).

As opposed to other kicking art, Panandyakan employs mostly low line kicks in awareness of the presence of weapons which may severe the legs if high kicks are deployed.
